Downtown and Midtown
Downtown is radically transforming beneath the hotel-casino resorts. All properties are succumbing to an exploding arts and entertainment community, as well as other innovations. Much of this is due to the impact of Burning Man, and you may want to spend some free time here before or after The Burn.
Midtown (south of Downtown, beyond the casinos) has become ground zero for many local Burners. Most of the businesses in the area are owned/staffed by Burners, and many Burners have come to live in the residential areas on either side. You’ll be able find most if not all of the supplies you need for the playa in this area.
Important Info:
– Virginia Street is the heart of Downtown Reno, but don’t use it to travel south through Downtown, as it’s mostly for tourists. Use Sierra and Center Streets, one-way streets on either side. But once through Downtown, do use Virginia Street to access Midtown and further south.
– There is ongoing road construction on Virginia Street in Midtown Reno between Plumb Lane and California Street. Plan on possibly being detoured to your destination and hunting for parking, but you shouldn’t expect significant delays.
– Street addresses divide east/west on either side of Virginia Street and north/south of the Truckee River (e.g. West 2nd Street is west of Virginia Street, and South Virginia Street is south of the Truckee River).
– Some parking is free downtown, some is not – be sure to have change available. Plan ahead to find parking for RV’s or other large vehicles (several of the casino-hotels can accomodate, see below.)
– You can also access the regional bus system hub at Lake and Fourth streets.
– The legendary (new and old) Reno “The Biggest Little City in the World” Arches are Downtown, respectively on Virginia Street at Commercial Row and Lake Street at the Truckee River.
– There is TONS of art – many of which graced Burning Man – that can be found throughout Downtown (see below in the Arts section for highlights).
